MVRDV Designs Gwanggyo Green Power Center Posted: 10 Dec 2008 10:33 AM PST We previously shared our adoration towards MVRDV when we spoke about the interior staircase in the Frosilos building in Copenhagen, but this project is on a whole other level. MVDRV architects recently won the Gwanggyo City Centre Competition with their design of this incredible new city just south of Seoul, South Korea. Envisioned as a verdant acropolis of organic 'hill' structures, the proposed complex is a fully self-sufficient city for up to 77,000 inhabitants. Similar nodes, common in South Korea, concentrate residences, work and play all in one interactive center, reducing dependency on auto or train travel and building a strong sense of community.
MVRDV's masterplan provides space for housing, offices, shops, and educational facilities. Designed as a cluster of structures rising up in concentric rings, each floor in the city is lined with lush box hedges that improve ventilation while reducing energy and water usage. An internal irrigation system stores extra water from the buildings and uses it to sustain these green facades. MVRDV states: "This diverse program has different needs for phasing, positioning and size. To facilitate this all elements are designed as rings. By pushing these rings outwards, every part of the program receives a terrace for outdoor life." The concept is currently being reviewed for development and feasibility at Gyeonggi provincial authority's Urban Innovation Corporation. Development is to be completed in 2011 and construction will start shortly after. via Inhabit Related posts:

Recycled Subway Cars Turned into Studios in London Posted: 10 Dec 2008 09:57 AM PST Imagine being a starving artist in New York (x 2). 2 times more expensive rent, 2 times more expensive food (5 times shittier than any option in NY), and just about anything else you can think of, 2 times more expensive! With this in mind furniture designer Auro Foxcroft came up with some urban ingenuity. His idea was to take abandoned subway cars, mount them on a rooftop, and use them for office space, renting space to artists for 15 pounds a week. The project, Village Underground is sure to inspire other green-minded, socially conscious artistic efforts. There are plans to expand this concept to Berlin, Lisbon, and Toronto. Now that’s some love for the arts!

“No Collection” Shows its Colors Posted: 10 Dec 2008 09:27 AM PST No Collection is a French brand that started in 2002 by designer Wanda Herbert as a response to to what she felt was missing in the womens commercial market. As the collection grew Wanda introduced accessories and footwear to the collection, and through its success in some of the best French and international reference accounts she decided in 2005 to open a private label shop in the Marais in Paris. The FW 08 Collection is by far the best I have seen of hers. i love teh bold use of colors and the easy flattering silhouettes which are a signature for her. Related posts:
